What would a 60 watt solar panel power? How many watts for a small home?

What would be helpful is some chart or diagram that would put this in perspective for me. I thought it would be neat to save up for solar panels for my home and take the load off my bill. Also, it would be nice to have something portable. But, when they say 60 watts can I run a tv and lights or just charge some batteries?

first the only things that run straight off these modules are variable speed DC motors. Pumps and fans primarily. I am sure you could run a light with a little engineering but who needs light while the sun is shining.

most televisions need 300 watts and up

As an Energy Auditor I can assure there is no average home.
Look at your own bill for a year and average it and that would be your average bill. There is always room for improvement to shave watts and maintain comfort and lifestyle.

most homes probably use at least 500Kwh some far more some far less. We use about 330Kwh

Your power output of your modules depends on sun hours

for instance I am in San Diego we average 5.6 sun hours

so a 60 watt panel would equal about 336 watts per day or 60 times 5.6

you have losses based on a number of factors count on 15 % for grid tied and 25% battery bank

or about 285 watts grid tied or 252 battery bank.

so with that panel you could run or offset 1 compact Fluorescent 13 watt bulb for 19-22 hours give or take.

How to make 12V 4.5A solar panel from solar cells?

I want to make 12V 4.5A solar panel to charge my battery used in my RC car project. I just like to know how should I amplify the current for 4.5A. I need the total circuit diagram. Can anyone help me. Please. I need some affordable methods please.

You can purchase a 12V, 5A (60watt) solar panel for $300:

http://www.amazon.com/60-Watt-Solar-Panel-Crystalline/dp/B001CD80HO

If you want to save money, you can purchase a much smaller solar panel & allow more time for your RC battery to charge. For example, if your battery is 12V, 4.5A, then a 10 watt panel would cost $60 and charge the battery in 5 hours:

http://www.amazon.com/10-Watt-Volt-Solar-Panel/dp/B003IESN5Y

The simplest way to use these panels is simply to connect the panel to your battery, with a diode in series to prevent the battery from discharging through the panel (no sunlight condition).

Just connect the battery for the required charge time & then disconnect it. Full sun is required, no shadows on the solar panel!

Help with Solar UPS for College Project?

For our college project, we decided to make a small scale solar UPS that would be used to light up an LED lamp. The Led requires a voltage of 3.1V and a Direct Current of about 5 mA. We decided to connect 3 small pencil rechargeable cells in series that gives a voltage of 1.2V at 600 mAh each. Now, we need to connect the solar panel in a way that it is able to charge this battery setup(3 pencil cells connected in series). Can anyone help us out with the circuit diagram for the same? Also, we were looking for a logic switch that could detect and prevent the flow of charges from Solar panel to the Battery setup when the battery setup is fully charged.

This is for a team of engineering majors? and you need help for this?

3 cells in series will provide 3.6v.
Connect a resistor in series with the led across this voltage.
if the led drops 3.1v, you will have 0.5v across the resistor.
To set led current at 5ma R=E/I =0.5/0.005 = 100 ohms.

Now get a solar cell or connect up solar cells to get a voltage of about 5VDC
go to Radio shack and get a voltage regulator I.C. that you can set to 3.6VDC out
once the batteries are charged they will stop receiving current.

Physics – please help me?

Do these two answers contradict eachother:

Q1) Four students are discussing a circuit. The circuit is in series and contains a lamp, an ammeter and a 10V battery.

Andy: the current in the lamp consists of negative charges moving from the negative batter terminal towards the positive battery terminal

Brandon: THe current in the lamp is a mixture of positive and negative ions

Charlie: the current in the lamp consists of negative charges moving towards the positive battery terminal and positive charges moving towards the negative battery terminal

Denzil: The lamp lights up when two different flows of charges crash into eachoher

Only one sutdent is correct

Answer: Andy is correct

Q2)
Darren uses a solar panel to charge a battery.
The circuit consists of two cells, one positive and the other negative.
Diagram: http://s359.photobucket.com/albums/oo40/jsmith613/?action=view&current=AdQ.png

The current in the wire is a flow of
a) negative electrons into the positive terminal of the battery
b) negative electrons out of the positive terminal of the battery
c) positive electrons into the positive terminal of the battery
d) positive electrons out of the positive terminal of the battery

Answer: B

Firstly, don’t the answer from Q1 and Q2 contradict each other
Secondly, doesn’t the diagram in Q2 contradict the answer

NOTE: these questions are from papers in the same exam series

When a battery is SUPPLYING current negatively charged electrons will migrate to the positive terminal.

When a battery RECEIVING current (that is being charged by some other device) the electrons will migrate toward the negative terminal.

It’s like the direction of water in the spout of a water pitcher as your filling or emptying it.
Does that make you happier?

wiring diagram of solar panel to battery to inverter?

The solar panels are wired through a regulator to keep from over charging the batteries and a diode block to keep the batteries from discharging back through the panel(s). The batteries are connected to the inverter directly – ideally through a relay that stops the batteries from being drained too far, although this may be built into the inverter. Inverter wiring is independent of panel wiring – you can take power out with the panels disconnected.

What is the best method of connecting two deep cycle batteries together and have power charged/drawn from the?

Ok, here is the situation. I want to use solar panels to power a bunch of appliances. The question really has become "where do you place the charger on the batteries"? I have seen diagrams showing a charger going into one battery and then distributing power to the second battery. Other diagrams indicate placing the positive charger on the first battery, and negative on the second.

Does one configuration allow both batteries to be charged simultaneously while the other charges the initial battery and then the second (feeding power from one battery to the next)?

Also does one configuration wear down one battery more than the other, and what would be a good recommendation?

Thanks!

When connecting two batteries in parallel, the "purist" will want you to connect to the Pos of one bat and the Neg of the other bat.

Connecting both of your charging or load connections to just one of the batteries would be perfectly acceptable – provided – the cables that connect it to the second battery had no resistance. In the real world, there will always be resistance in the wire and terminations. By making the Pos connection to one battery and the Neg to the other, current into or out of either battery will have to flow thru one of the interconnecting cables and both will see the exact same load.

If the interconnecting cables were only 1 foot long and made of very heavy cable (like a #4 battery cable) and your load was small (just a few amps), you could connect both of the load wires to the same battery and never know the difference. If you were cranking an engine (very heavy load), this would cause some drop in the interconnecting cables and the second battery would not provide its share of the power.

Since the batteries will be next to each other, there is no reason not to connect the load or charge with Pos to one bat and Neg to the other. If this were a camper with the second battery located remotely, this may not be practical and you just live with it.

Note: When connecting batteries in parallel, make sure they are identical. If there is a difference in the battery (even different concentration of acid in the cells), the batteries wont play well together. If you have not yet purchased the batteries, might I suggest that instead of two 12v batteries that you get two 6v batteries and wire them in series? This eliminates the balancing issue completely. 6v Golf-Cart batteries are designed for deep-cycle use and would likely be a good option for your solar power system.

QUICK!! I need this answering within the next half an hour…?

Sorry about that ^
Anyways…. Please could you give me a brief explination of how solar panels / solar cells work?
Needs to be short enough to fit in a powerpoint document, any pictures or diagrams would be of great help
Thanks! :)

Solar cells use light (photons) to generate power (voltage). It naturally follows that this process be called the photovoltaic effect.

When solar radiation is absorbed by solar cells, photons from the sunlight enter the cell and bump into electrons and displace them. At this point, special electrical semi-conductors within the solar cell capture these electrons and complete a circuit between the top (negative charge) and bottom (positive charge) of the solar cell.

The process may vary slightly depending on the various types of solar cell, but the basics remain the same as shown in the diagram on the website

a solar panel/module is a group of solar cells. they work the same way.
